After a brief hiatus, Gold Coast Permaculture is now installing home gardens once again under the watchful eye of our resident market garden manager Josh. Josh has written a brief bio and blurb below

My name is Josh, I grew up on the Gold Coast with a family of organic gardeners and Permaculture designers, so I have always had an interest in, and passion for sustainable healthy food and organic practices.

Currently I am in my final year of a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Government and International relations at Griffith University. I have taken market gardening courses with All Sun Farm and have also completed my advanced Permaculture design certificate. I read widely on organic practices especially those related to the sub tropics and humid tropics.

I practice a unique bio intensive style of gardening at GCP market gardens. Our gardens are created using local resources, high quality composts and microbial applications. These composts are created by our team at GCP on our Cararra site. We believe our style of gardening is beyond organic and after 7 years of trial and research, we know it works.

At GCP we use an ecological approach to gardening based on biological methods. Our gardens are water saving, higher yielding per meter compared to traditional food gardens, based on local resource with no fertilizer used. Our method of gardening borrows from John Jeavons’ system of bio intensive agriculture, no-dig gardening and a solid understanding of the soil food web by Elaine Ingham.

This is underpinned by knowledge of regional and climate appropriate foods to create gardens that give and give year round.

We work with nature not against it.

Although gardening can be so simple, it is also be incredibly complex and there are a number of mistakes a beginner gardener can make. Often it can be difficult to wrap ones head around the minutiae. These mistakes can be costly and lead to the feeling of failure, in what should be an enjoyable relaxed stress free pursuit.

In my time as the market gardener at GCP, I have been involved in the construction of well over a hundred bio intensive garden beds which has meant that I have a good understanding of how these  systems work in the real world.

Our system is very easy to manage and does not require back breaking digging or lots of weeding, mucky manures and bad smells that are often required in traditional organic methods. It’s a system that is easily enjoyed and understood.

Growing your own food can bring a number of benefits. Our research shows that for each dollar invested in a garden 2-3 dollars is returned. There is the added security of knowing exactly where your food came from and that it could not be fresher. Not to mention the satisfaction of knowing that you are caring for the environment, creating habitat and learning a valuable life skill whilst producing clean and healthy food.
